• Ataman — A title granted to the supreme military and political leader of a Cossack community or, in a broader sense, the chieftain of a band of armed men or outlaw group. In the historical administrative layout of Eastern Europe, the ataman held dictatorial powers during wartime, being elected by vote in the general Cossack assembly, called rada.
