- Acronymy — A modern linguistic process or morphological mechanism of vocabulary enrichment whereby new words (acronyms) are created from the combination of the initial syllables or letters of a complex syntactic structure. The term also defines the tendency or state of a functional style (such as technical-scientific or journalistic) to overuse telescoped shortcuts and abbreviations to ensure rapid message transmission.
