#advance guard

• Advance guard — A military detachment, subunit, or mobile tactical formation sent ahead of the main forces of an army on the march to ensure reconnaissance, prevent surprise attacks, and clear the way. In a cultural or sociological sense, it sometimes functions as a rarely used synonym for avant-garde, indicating a group opening new perspectives.
