• Abelia engleriana — A shrub species belonging to the Abelia genus, remarkable for its characteristic funnel-shaped flowers and high biological adaptability. In experimental phytotherapy, pharmacognosy, and toxicology, the species is monitored for its chemical profile rich in flavonoids and terpenic compounds. These metabolites are clinically studied in laboratory models to evaluate analgesic and peripheral anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the capacity to reduce stress-induced painful somatizations at the neuro-muscular level.
• Abies amabilis / Pacific silver fir — A species of fir native to the mountainous regions of Western North America, commonly known as the Pacific silver fir or amabilis fir. In Native American ethnomedicine and contemporary clinical aromatherapy, hydroalcoholic extracts and essential oils distilled from the needles and bark of Abies amabilis are studied and utilized for their remarkable analgesic, potent antioxidant, and respiratory tract antimicrobial properties.
• Abies procera / Noble fir — A large conifer species native to the Cascade Range of western North America, commonly known as the noble fir. In modern aromatherapy and balneoclimatology, the essential oil distilled from the needles of Abies procera is highly valued for its purity and intense balsamic scent, possessing proven clinical properties as a peripheral circulatory stimulant, excellent muscle analgesic, and powerful upper respiratory tract decongestant.
• Algezi- — A scientific combining form (initial prefixoid) utilized within modern medical terminology to construct derived words relating to pain sensations or painful sensitivity. Derived from Greek roots, it serves as a structural tool to build clinical terms like algeziometrie.
• Algology — A scientific discipline possessing a dual independent application: 1. (In biology / botany) The branch of science dealing with the comprehensive study of algae (phycology). 2. (In medicine) The specialized branch focused on the theoretical study, diagnosis, and therapeutic management of acute and chronic pain (algesiology).
• Algometry — A clinical method, diagnostic technique, or laboratory procedure used for the quantitative measurement and precise determination of an individual's pain sensitivity threshold. Performed using an algometer that applies calibrated stimuli, it enables the objective evaluation of nociception.
• Algometer — An apparatus, device, or medical instrument used in neurology, rheumatology, and experimental physiology to accurately measure a patient's pain sensitivity or tolerance threshold. The device operates by applying calibrated mechanical, thermal, or electrical stimuli onto a specific area of the body.
• Algostasis — The arrest, blockade, or temporary or permanent suspension of pain sensations; the achievement of analgesia through therapeutic or pharmacological methods. In algology and anesthesia, it describes the clinical stage where nociceptive impulses are interrupted at the synaptic or peripheral level.
• Amidopyrine — A medicinal compound from the pyrazolone class, historically used as a potent analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory agent, chemically known as aminophenazone. Although it possesses high structural efficiency in combating fever and acute pain, its modern clinical use has been severely restricted or banned in most countries due to the documented risk of inducing severe agranulocytosis and the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in the stomach.
• Aminophenazone — An organic compound of the pyrazolone class, historically widely used as a drug with potent analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties (also known as pyramidon). Due to its major structural risk of causing severe agranulocytosis and its carcinogenic potential through the formation of nitrosamines, its clinical use has been banned or severely restricted in modern medicine.
• Anadol — An historical commercial name attributed to an analgesic and antipyretic pharmaceutical preparation (based on aminophenol derivatives or related substances), structurally used in the past to relieve moderate pain and reduce febrile states. In a broader toxicological or chemical sense, the term can be encountered as a root or variant in the nomenclature of certain synthetic analgesic compounds studied for their effects on central nervous system receptors.
• Analgesic — A medication, substance, or chemical compound structurally utilized to calm, attenuate, or completely suppress the sensation of pain, without causing loss of consciousness or general sensitivity (unlike anesthetics). Clinically classified into non-opioid analgesics (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen) and opioid or narcotic analgesics (such as morphine), these preparations act either by inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory mediators at the periphery or by binding to specific receptors in the central nervous system.
• Analgesia — The total absence, complete loss, or pathological or therapeutic diminution of sensitivity to pain, without the loss of consciousness or other sensory modalities (such as tactile or thermal sensitivity). In a structural clinical sense, it can occur as a symptom in severe neurological disorders (like syringomyelia or spinothalamic tract lesions) or can be deliberately induced through the administration of analgesics, local anesthesia techniques, or neurostimulation procedures for patient comfort.
• Anodynia — Complete absence of pain or the congenital or acquired inability to feel physical suffering in the presence of an obvious harmful stimulus; absolute analgesia. This rare neurological condition is caused by peripheral receptor dysfunctions, lesions of the spinothalamic tracts, or structural anomalies in the higher nervous centers, exposing the patient to major risks of involuntary self-injury.
• Antalgic — Having the property to calm, diminish, or suppress the sensation of pain; analgesic. As a noun, it denotes any medicinal substance or pharmaceutical preparation administered to block the transmission of pain signals to the central nervous system without causing loss of consciousness.
• Analgesic — A medication or chemical substance used to relieve, mitigate, or suppress the sensation of pain; an analgesic. It acts either peripherally by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis or centrally by interacting with opioid receptors.
• Antineuralgic — A property of a substance or medication to combat, alleviate, or suppress violent pain localized along the path of a nerve; in a noun sense, it represents a complex analgesic and antipyretic pharmaceutical preparation, widely used for the rapid relief of headaches, dental or intercostal neuralgias, and mild febrile states.
• Antipyrine — A synthetic organic chemical substance from the pyrazolone class, historically used in medicine as the first major synthetic analgesic and antipyretic; a crystalline, water-soluble compound that acts structurally by blocking the synthesis of inflammatory mediators. Currently, its systemic use is limited due to the risk of adverse side effects, being rarely encountered, mostly in local topical solutions or ear drops.
• Autoanalgesia — A physiological, neurological, or psychological phenomenon whereby the body spontaneously diminishes, blocks, or suppresses its own perception of physical pain through the internal release of endorphins, enkephalins, or by activating descending inhibitory pathways of the central nervous system, without the administration of external analgesic substances.
