#algology
- Akinetospore — An asexual, unicellular reproductive spore completely lacking flagella or cilia and consequently non-motile (immobile), characteristic of certain species of green algae, red algae, or lower fungi; unlike zoospores, it cannot move autonomously in the aquatic environment, being passively dispersed by water currents or wind. This biological structure is protected by a well-developed, rigid cell wall that allows it to survive unfavorable ecological conditions (such as temporary drought or temperature drops) until the environment becomes optimal for germination.
- Akinetosporangium — A specialized sporangium-type cellular organ (spore sac) inside which only akinetospores (asexual, unicellular reproductive spores completely lacking locomotion organs like flagella or cilia) are formed and matured; this biological anatomical structure is characteristic of certain genera of filamentous algae or lower fungi. The wall of this vessel is typically denser and structurally adapted to protect the static reproductive cells against destructive abiotic factors in the aquatic or terrestrial environment until the passive release phase of the spores.
- Algology — A scientific discipline possessing a dual independent application: 1. (In biology / botany) The branch of science dealing with the comprehensive study of algae (phycology). 2. (In medicine) The specialized branch focused on the theoretical study, diagnosis, and therapeutic management of acute and chronic pain (algesiology).
- Algostasis — The arrest, blockade, or temporary or permanent suspension of pain sensations; the achievement of analgesia through therapeutic or pharmacological methods. In algology and anesthesia, it describes the clinical stage where nociceptive impulses are interrupted at the synaptic or peripheral level.
- Anadyomena — A genus of marine green algae in the family Anadyomenaceae, structurally characterized by a flat, foliaceous, fan-shaped or leaf-like thallus made of branched filaments arranged in a distinct single cellular layer. These macroalgal organisms develop primarily in warm tropical and subtropical waters, being studied in systematic algology for their unique flabellate cellular architecture and their role in reef biocenoses.
- Auxospore — A specialized reproductive cell or growth spore formed as a result of sexual reproduction (or autogamy) in unicellular phytoplanktonic algae of the diatom class (Bacillariophyceae); this spore expands considerably in volume to restore the original size of the species, compensating for the progressive reduction of the siliceous frustule that occurs during successive asexual divisions.
