#anatomy terminology
- Alae — The plural form of the feminine noun 'ala'; in ancient Roman military history, it designates multiple auxiliary cavalry or infantry units placed on the army's flanks; in anatomy and zoology, it represents the prominent symmetrical wings or structural formations of certain bones, organs, or insects (such as alae sacrales or the nasal wings). This structural term of morphological precision describes paired lateral elements that ensure aerodynamic balance, skeletal stability, or mechanical protection of an anatomical opening.
- Appendico- — A neological first element of composition (combining form) extracted from Latin and Greek lexicons, used in medical and biological terminology to introduce a direct structural reference to the appendix (especially the vermiform appendix). It serves to form compound terms such as appendicostomy or appendicoplasty.
- Apical — Pertaining to the apex (tip), relating to it, or located at the terminal zone of a structure. In phonetics, it describes sounds (consonants) articulated by touching or bringing the tip of the tongue close to the teeth or alveoli; in botany, it refers to elements positioned at the tip of the stem or root (e.g., apical bud, apical meristem), and in medicine, it indicates localization at an organ's extremity.
- Apices — The plural form for the masculine noun 'apex' (used alternatively with 'apexuri' in scientific or medical jargon) or the plural form of the anatomical archaism 'apendic'; designates the tips, upper extremities, or terminal points of organic, biological, or dental structures.
