- Monopoly lease — A historical and economic term designating a medieval contract or system of leasing the monopoly over the exploitation or commercialization of mass consumption goods or strategic resources (such as salt, tobacco, customs, or alcoholic beverages) in the Romanian Principalities during the Phanariote regime. Through this structural agreement, the beneficiary (called apaltas) paid a fixed sum to the princely treasury in exchange for the exclusive right to collect the related taxes.
