#apanage

• Apanagist — A person (usually a high-ranking member of a royal or princely family, such as a younger son of the monarch) who holds, benefits from, or administers an apanage (a landed estate or a financial allowance provided as a means of autonomous subsistence). In an extended sense, the term describes a system or property governed according to the rules of dynastic apanage allocation.
• Apanage — A frequently encountered spelling and phonetic variant of the word 'apanaj'; in a figurative and modern sense, it represents an exclusive asset, an exclusive privilege, a specific quality, or a sovereign right held or exercised by a single person, a restricted group, or a specific entity, being considered an alienable defining trait.
• Apanage — The standard literary form of the term; in a historical and legal sense, it represents a landed estate or a consistent financial pension allocated by the sovereign to members of the royal family (usually younger sons) as an independent means of subsistence, to compensate for their exclusion from the succession to the throne. Figuratively, it defines an exclusive privilege, a moral monopoly, or a specific prerogative of a category of people.
