• Ascogonium — The multicellular or unicellular female reproductive organ (gametangium), specific to ascomycete fungi, which receives male nuclei from the antheridium during the plasmogamy process. From this fertilized cellular segment, the ascogenous hyphae that will bear the spore-containing asci subsequently arise.
