- Astronautical engineer — A highly qualified technician, engineer, or specialist in the field of astronautics, responsible for the direct application of astrodynamics laws, the design of propulsion systems, or the structural maintenance of spacecraft and orbital stations. Unlike an astronaut, they do not travel into outer space, but instead coordinate the mathematical, engineering, and logistical aspects of extra-atmospheric flight from the ground.
