• Autonoë — 1. A Theban princess in Greek mythology, the eldest daughter of King Cadmus (the founder of Thebes) and the goddess Harmonia, wife of Aristaeus, and mother of the ill-fated hunter Actaeon. Her name, literally translated as 'thinking for oneself' or 'self-minded', is tragically linked to the episodes of Dionysian frenzy where, seized by ritual madness driven by the gods, she joined her sisters in the dismemberment of her nephew Pentheus. 2. A small natural satellite of the planet Jupiter, discovered in 2001 and officially named after the mythological figure.
