#azotophilic

• Azotophilic — Developing optimally in nitrogen-rich environments or showing a pronounced biological affinity for nitrogenous compounds. In botany and microbiology, the term describes organisms (bacteria, fungi, or nitrophilous plants) whose structural metabolic processes and multiplication rates are directly stimulated by a high concentration of available nitrogen in the substrate.
• Azotophilic — The feminine form of the adjective azotophilous; it characterizes a plant species, bacterial strain, or microbial population that displays a pronounced structural affinity for soils or growth media saturated with nitrogen compounds. In an ecological sense, it describes nitrophilous indicator plants that colonize anthropized or heavily fertilized habitats where organic matter decomposition releases large amounts of ammonia and nitrates.
