• Babism — Bábism; a messianic religious and reform movement that arose in Persia (Iran) in the mid-19th century (1844), founded by Sayyid 'Ali Muhammad of Shiraz, known as the Báb (The Gate); this doctrine preached social equality, women's rights, the abolition of strict Islamic laws, and formed the spiritual foundation from which the Bahá'í Faith later developed.
