- Excommunication — The act of excommunicating or anathematizing; a solemn ecclesiastical decree by which a person is excluded from the community of believers. In old Romanian feudal law, this measure represented a severe spiritual punishment as well as a form of civil death, stripping the condemned of legal protections.
