• Excommunicated — A person who has been excluded from the church community, excommunicated, or placed under an official ecclesiastical curse. In old popular speech, the word acquired strong pejorative connotations, being used as an insulting epithet for a wicked, stubborn, or faithless individual.
• Cursed — Having been struck by anathema or excommunicated from the church; cursed, wicked, or villainous. In current and informal speech, it describes a hard-to-handle object, a difficult, bad, or annoying situation, or a person (often a child) who is mischievous, shrewd, stubborn, or wicked, yet sometimes viewed with a hint of hidden fondness.
