#dithyramb

• Arion — A legendary poet and musician of Ancient Greece (7th century BC), native to the island of Lesbos, considered the inventor of the dithyramb; according to myth, he was saved from drowning by a dolphin charmed by the music of his lyre. In Romanian onomastics, the name frequently appears as a surname or historical male given name; in biology, it designates a genus of terrestrial slugs without shells.
• Bacchylides — An ancient Greek lyric poet (5th century BC), native to Iulis on the island of Ceos, nephew of Simonides and a contemporary rival of Pindar. He is renowned for his epinicians (triumphal odes dedicated to victors at the Panhellenic games) and dithyrambs, which are characterized by an elegant narrative style, great clarity of expression, fluid composition, and a refined use of myths reflected in artistic images of exceptional sensitivity.
