• Akashi — A proper noun designating a historical port city and an important industrial center located in the Hyōgo prefecture of Japan, on the coast of the homonymous strait; by extension, the term is world-famous due to the Akashi-Kaikyō Bridge, one of the largest and most complex suspension engineering structures in the world, which connects the city of Kobe to Awaji Island across the strait. This structural landmark represents a triumph of modern seismic architecture, being designed to withstand devastating earthquakes and violent typhoons specific to the Japanese archipelago.
