#mycology terms
- Adelomycete — A scientific term used to designate a microscopic fungus belonging to a group characterized by incomplete developmental stages or hidden, inconspicuous, or partially unknown reproductive structures. This type of mycotic organism, often classified in the past among imperfect fungi, exhibits a complex biological cycle analyzed in the laboratory to determine its forms of reproduction.
- Areolate — Provided with areoles, or exhibiting surfaces divided into small distinct portions or polygons isolated by structural lines, cracks, or furrows. In botany and mycology, it describes leaves, stems, or mushroom caps whose cuticles are geometrically fragmented due to dryness. In lichenology, it defines a lichen thallus cracked into small blocks resembling mosaic tiles.
- Aspergillus molds — A plural vernacular or medical term designating microscopic fungi (molds) of the genus Aspergillus, structurally characterized by conidiophores with an apical vesicle bearing radiating sterigmata; these saprophytic fungi are ubiquitous in the environment and can cause severe opportunistic infections (aspergillosis) or pulmonary allergic reactions in immunocompromised organisms.
- Aspergilliform — Having the shape or appearance of an aspergillum (a holy water sprinkler or an Aspergillus head); an anatomical or microscopic structure provided with filaments, hairs, or projections radiating around a central axis, reminiscent of the conidial head of the Aspergillus mold.
- Azygospore — A zygospore formed atypically through parthenogenesis from a single gametangium, without the prior fusion of two distinct sexual reproductive cells; a plant structure or organism characterized by producing such unpaired spores.
