- Badakhshan — An extensive historical region and mountainous province located in northeastern Afghanistan and southeastern Tajikistan (within the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountain ranges). Historically and culturally, the region has been famous since antiquity for its unique mines of lapis lazuli, red spinel, and rubies, being crossed by the northern branches of the Silk Road.
