• Ageusia — A total loss of the sense of taste, caused by lesions of the lingual mucosa, the afferent nerve pathways (facial, glossopharyngeal nerve), or the gustatory centers in the cerebral cortex. It can be congenital, but it is most frequently an acquired symptom following trauma, respiratory infections, or drug treatments.
