Alcala Zamora y Torres
Definition
Niceto Alcalá-Zamora y Torres (1877–1949), a Spanish lawyer and politician who served as Prime Minister and subsequently as the first president of the Second Spanish Republic between 1931 and 1936. A moderate and conservative figure, he attempted to maintain a democratic balance between radical left-wing and right-wing factions, being deposed shortly before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War and dying in exile in Argentina.
