Definition
An abnormal, permanent, and pathological enlargement of the caliber or volume of a blood vessel (artery or vein) or a major lymphatic trunk. This structural phenomenon of well-defined vascular hypertrophy can occur due to congenital wall defects, prolonged chronic circulatory stasis, or hemodynamic pressure modifications, weakening the tissues and increasing the risk of secondary functional insufficiency.
