Argos
Definition
A historic city in the Peloponnese, Greece, considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe; a major political center in the Mycenaean era. In mythology, it names the giant monster with a hundred eyes (Argos Panoptes) tasked by Hera with guarding Io, or Odysseus's faithful dog in the 'Odyssey'. As a rare adjective or combining form in technical or old regional terminology, it can be structurally associated with bright, white elements or large ships (from the Latin argos / argosy - large merchant vessel).
