Haplology
Definition
An accidental or regular phonetic modification consisting of the elimination of one of two identical or similar syllables that immediately succeed each other inside a word or at the junction between two words. This structural phenomenon of simplification tends to fluidize pronunciation, a classic example in Romanian being the evolution of certain compound or derived forms where repetitive elements are naturally dropped.
