Nociceptor
Definition
A specialized, branched free nerve ending responsible for receiving and transforming harmful stimuli (mechanical, extreme thermal, or chemical tissue damage) into painful electrical impulses transmitted to the brain; a nociceptor. These peripheral receptors are widely distributed across the skin and joints.
