#Asparagaceae

• Agavaceae — A taxonomic family of monocotyledonous angiosperm plants (Agavaceae), currently classified as a subfamily (Agavoideae) within the Asparagaceae family. It comprises perennial, xerophytic, or succulent plants, with leaves often arranged in basal rosettes and perfectly adapted to hot and dry climates, including famous economic and ornamental genera such as Agave, Yucca, and Sansevieria.
• Agave — The official taxonomic genus grouping numerous succulent plant species within the subfamily Agavoideae, family Asparagaceae. Members of this genus are renowned for their CAM metabolism which enables water conservation, their socio-economic importance in producing traditional distilled beverages (such as tequila and mezcal), and their major ecological distribution within New World arid biomes.
• Agave americana — A famous species of succulent and xerophytic plant within the genus Agave, native to Mexico and the United States, but widely naturalized globally, including the Mediterranean basin. Commonly known as the American aloe or century plant due to the misconception that it blooms only once every hundred years, it is distinguished by its impressive size, grayish-green leaves with spiny margins, and a spectacular inflorescence that can reach up to eight meters in height.
• Agave filifera — A small to medium-sized species of succulent plant within the genus Agave, native to the arid regions of central Mexico. It is easily recognized due to its unique morphological feature: its rigid, narrow, dark green leaves display thin, ornamental white threads along the margins, resembling elastic filaments (fibers) that naturally peel off as the leaf matures.
• Agave geminiflora — A unique species of succulent plant within the genus Agave, native to the state of Nayarit, Mexico. This plant is structurally characterized by an extremely dense and symmetrical rosette composed of hundreds of narrow, linear, flexible, and rounded leaves, lacking marginal teeth but often featuring decorative white filaments peeling from the edges. Its specific epithet refers to its spectacular flowering spike, where the flowers appear arranged in twin pairs along the stalk.
• Agave parrasana — A compact and highly ornamental species of succulent plant within the genus Agave, endemic to high mountainous areas in the Parras region, Coahuila state, Mexico. The plant is distinguished by a globose, tight rosette composed of short, wide, obovate leaves of a blue-gray or glaucous color, heavily armed with prominent marginal teeth and a long terminal spine of a contrasting reddish-brown shade, possessing remarkable resistance to low temperatures.
• Agave salmiana — A massive and imposing species of succulent plant within the genus Agave, native to the central and southern regions of Mexico, commonly known as maguey pulquero. This gigantic plant is characterized by a huge rosette composed of long, extremely fleshy, dark green leaves, elegantly curved outward and armed with massive marginal teeth, being the primary species historically and currently used for producing the traditional Mexican fermented beverage known as pulque.
• Agave stricta — A species of perennial succulent plant endemic to the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley in the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca, belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It is recognized by its unique, extremely dense, and symmetrical spherical rosette, composed of hundreds of narrow, linear, rigid, and sharp light green or glaucous needle-like leaves. Unlike most species in its genus, this plant is partially polycarpic, meaning the rosette does not always die after flowering, but can continue to grow and branch, forming massive, rounded, cushion-like colonies.
• Albuca — A genus of perennial herbaceous bulbous plants in the asparagus family (subfamily Scilloideae), native mainly to Southern and Eastern Africa, characterized by linear or spiraled leaves and erect or pendulous flowers with delicate floral stems and specific perianth segments, often yellow, green, or white with dark median stripes.
• Nelson's slime lily — A species of large perennial herbaceous bulbous plant in the genus Albuca, native to the coastal regions of South Africa; it is characterized by robust floral stems that can reach up to one meter in height, fleshy green leaves, and spectacular inflorescences composed of large, white flowers decorated with a distinctive, vibrant green median stripe on each tepal.
• Anthericum — A genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae (subfamily Agavoideae), characterized by linear leaves in a basal rosette and star-shaped white flowers arranged in long racemes or panicles.
• Anthericum liliago — The scientific name for St. Bernard's lily, a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Asparagaceae. Characterized by long, narrow linear leaves and an unbranched raceme inflorescence with large, star-shaped white flowers, it is adapted to calcareous soils and sunny slopes across Europe.
• Anthericum ramosum — The scientific name for branched lily-asphodel, a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Asparagaceae. It is distinguished by its highly branched, paniculate flower stalk and star-shaped white flowers that are slightly smaller than those of Anthericum liliago.
• Aphyllanthes — A genus of xerophytic perennial plants within the family Asparagaceae, native to the western Mediterranean region (especially southern France and Spain). It comprises a single recognized species, Aphyllanthes monspeliensis, remarkable for its rigid, thin green stems that resemble rushes or grass, lacking developed leaves, and producing spectacular bright blue flowers at their tips.
• Arthropodium — A genus of perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asparagaceae (subfamily Lomandroideae), native primarily to the Southern Hemisphere, particularly Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Madagascar. These plants are structurally characterized by tuberous roots or short rhizomes, linear leaves, and delicate flowers arranged in panicle inflorescences, featuring stamen filaments covered with fine hairs, from which its etymological name derives.
• Arthropodium cirrhatum — A species of perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Arthropodium, endemic to New Zealand, where it is popularly known as the Renga Renga lily. This structurally decorative plant features large tufts of blue-green leaves, star-shaped white flowers with bi-colored (yellow and purple) stamen filaments hooked like tendrils, widely used in landscaping and historically recognized for the food and medicinal properties of its rhizomes in Māori culture.
• Asparagus — Scientific and popular name for a genus of herbaceous or shrubby plants in the Asparagaceae family, frequently cultivated as an ornamental indoor plant due to its extremely fine, needle-like branched leaves covered in intense green. In a narrow culinary or horticultural sense, the term refers directly to asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), a vegetable plant whose young, tender shoots are globally recognized as a refined gastronomic delicacy.
