#DNA
- Adenine — A fundamental purine nitrogenous base, with a heterocyclic structure composed of two condensed rings, an essential component of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). It plays a crucial structural role in storing and transmitting genetic information through specific hydrogen bonds with thymine or uracil, being also a key element in molecules vital for cellular energy metabolism, such as ATP.
- Adenovirus — A genus of medium-sized, non-enveloped viruses with an icosahedral structure and a double-stranded DNA genome, responsible for a wide range of infectious diseases in humans and animals. This structural pathogen frequently infects the linings of the respiratory, digestive, and ocular tracts, causing rhinitis, pharyngitis, gastroenteritis, or epidemic conjunctivitis.
- DNA — Deoxyribonucleic acid; a complex macromolecule formed by a double helical strand of nucleotides, which constitutes the material basis of genetic information in all living organisms and most viruses. Structurally, it contains the genes responsible for heredity, development, and biological functioning, primarily located within the cell nucleus.
- Adnascent — A botanical term from old or restricted scientific nomenclature, used to describe an organism, plant structure, or epiphytic plant (frequently fern species, such as Pyrrosia adnascens) that grows tightly attached or structurally joined to the trunk or bark of another tree, without necessarily absorbing its sap.
- Adnate — United, fused, or tightly attached, from the embryonic or structural development stage, to another organ or part of an organism; specific to floral elements (such as stamens fused to the corolla) or the gills of certain mushrooms that connect directly and broadly to the stem (stipe). This biological phenomenon ensures increased structural cohesion of the organs.
- Tunica adnata — An old or restrictively used anatomical term as a noun to designate the conjunctive membrane of the eye (tunica adnata) or a transparent structure closely attached to the cornea; it reflects a complete structural fusion of periocular protective tissues. In modern current usage, the feminine adjectival form 'adnată' is primarily used in agreement with various organs.
- Adnation — A biological or structural phenomenon consisting of the congenital union, fusion, or concrescence of organs or floral parts belonging to different whorls (for instance, the fusion of stamens with the petals of the corolla). This process is essential in plant taxonomy, determining major evolutionary modifications in plant morphology and optimizing pollination mechanisms.
- Ahdname — An archaic graphic and phonetic form (attested in old Romanian chronicles) for ahdiname; an official diplomatic treaty, solemn charter, or imperial decree through which the sultans of the Ottoman Empire granted specific legal privileges, structural autonomy, protection, or commercial freedoms to vassal states (such as the Romanian Principalities) or Christian subjects. These documents established the legal framework for bilateral relations and represented a sacred imperial guarantee.
- Ahdname — A phonetic and structural variant with feminine inflection for the term ahtinam (ahdiname). Used by some Moldavian and Wallachian chroniclers (such as Ion Neculce) to designate the official diplomatic document through which the Ottoman Porte established the peace and privileges of a country, the linguistic form reflecting the popular adaptation of the Eastern ending.
- Primer — A fluid liquid product, primer, or chemical mixture applied onto an absorbent support surface (wall, concrete, wood) prior to painting, plastering, or tiling, aiming to reduce porosity, bind dust, and ensure optimal adhesion of subsequent layers. In biology, the term describes a short nucleic acid sequence (primer) required to initiate DNA replication, and as a verb, it means to initiate, prepare, or set a mechanism in motion.
- Anticarcinogenic — Preventing the onset, development, or progression of cancer by annihilating carcinogenic or mutagenic agents; a chemical substance, antioxidant food, or biological compound capable of protecting cellular DNA structure against malignant degradation. In diets and preventive medicine, it indicates the property of certain substances (such as vitamins C and E, selenium, or polyphenols) to neutralize free radicals.
- Anti-corruption — Combating, preventing, or punishing acts of corruption, abuse of power, bribery, or trading in influence; a set of legislative measures, judicial structures, or public campaigns designed to ensure integrity within state institutions. In an institutional sense, it defines specialized control bodies and prosecutor offices tasked with investigating economic and administrative offenses.
- Aravon — An archaic and ecclesiastical term, borrowed from Ancient Greek, historically used in Romanian religious and legal texts to denote a pledge, earnest money, or betrothal viewed as a sacred or material guarantee of a future promise. In a theological context, it symbolizes the earnest of the Holy Spirit.
- Aravonă — A feminine inflectional variant of the archaic and ecclesiastical term 'aravon'; it denotes an earnest, a pledge, a material guarantee, or a betrothal viewed as a solemn and sacred commitment before the community and the church. In medieval documents, the form was occasionally used interchangeably with masculine variants.
- To aravoni — An archaic and regional verbal form derived from the noun 'aravon', meaning to leave a pledge, to pay earnest money, to guarantee a transaction, or to solemnly betroth. This ecclesiastical verb was encountered sporadically in ancient law translations and church texts to express the securing of a covenant.
- Aravonire — The act of pledging and its result; the legal or ecclesiastical process of depositing earnest money, a pledge, or a solemn guarantee to secure a future agreement. In a medieval ecclesiastical context, it referred to the formal process of ritual betrothal of two youths before the altar, recorded in parish deeds.
- Act of paying a deposit — The act of arăvonisire and its result; the formal or legal process of paying a monetary advance or offering a material pledge to secure a purchase or contract. In ancient social life, the term denoted the ceremony or official act of betrothing two young people, sealed with gifts and often recorded in a chancery deed.
- Ariadne — A famous character in Greek mythology, daughter of King Minos of Crete and Pasiphae, who helped Theseus kill the Minotaur and escape the Labyrinth by providing him with a ball of thread (Ariadne's thread). In astronomy, the term designates asteroid number 43 in the main belt; metaphorically, the name represents the symbol of a secure guide or an ingenious solution that allows an escape from an extremely complex situation.
- Ariadne — A proper name of Greek mythological origin (Ariadne), used in literary Romanian or international scientific contexts as a common noun or neologism to describe a guiding element, a structural rescue strategy, or a guiding thread within an extremely complex situation. In a specialized sense, the term identifies the butterfly genus 'Ariadne' from the Nymphalidae family or the main-belt asteroid 43 Ariadne.
- Autosome — A scientific term synonymous with autosome; any of the somatic chromosomes of an organism that is identical in structure and number in both sexes, as opposed to heterochromosomes or sex chromosomes (allosomes). Humans possess a structural set of 22 pairs of autochromosomes that store and transmit non-sexual hereditary information.
