- To approach — To directly address a person to initiate a conversation, negotiation, or social interaction; to begin to study, discuss, treat, or solve a complex problem, a theoretical topic, or a critical situation; (original maritime sense) to bring a vessel into direct contact with another vessel or the shore, either voluntarily or due to an accidental collision.
- To abort — To prematurely, spontaneously, or deliberately terminate the development of a pregnancy (miscarriage or abortion); (in computer science and technology, by modern extension) to forcibly stop the execution of a program, a script, or a technical operation before its complete finalization; (figurative, literary sense) to fail in achieving a plan, a project, or an action during its incipient phases.
- Abaeus — A Greek mythological epithet assigned to the god Apollo, derived from the town of Abae in Phocis, where the god had a famous temple and oracle. In the history of medicine and cultural anthropology, Abaeus is studied in connection with cathartic (purification) cults and healing rituals through incubation (sacred sleep in the temple to receive a diagnosis in a dream), specific to pre-Hippocratic theurgic medicine.
- Abakan — The capital city of the Republic of Khakassia, Russian Federation, located in southern Siberia at the confluence of the Abakan and Yenisei rivers. In medical geography and infectious diseases, the region is actively monitored for natural foci of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and other arboviruses specific to the taiga, serving as a base for studies on indigenous population immunity and vector dynamics.
- Abaris — A legendary figure in Greek mythology, known as Abaris the Hyperborean, a priest of Apollo, healer, and shaman attested by Pindar and Herodotus. In the history of medicine and anthropology, he is studied as a representative of archaic pre-scientific medical practices (iatromantis), curing epidemics through incantations, exorcisms, and spiritual purification rituals.
- Slaughter / Slaughtering operation — The working area in a mine where useful minerals are extracted, or the operation of slaughtering livestock in a slaughterhouse. In occupational medicine, the mining abataj is heavily studied due to the high risk of pneumoconioses (silicosis, anthracosis) induced by industrial dust inhalation, while in public hygiene, zootechnical slaughter involves strict regulations to prevent bacterial meat contamination and control zoonoses.
- Abbot — The superior of a Roman Catholic monastery of monks (abbot). In the history of medicine and hospital care, abbots played a major administrative role during the Middle Ages, coordinating monastic hospitals (xenodochia) and infirmaries attached to abbeys, where pilgrims, the poor, and the sick received care and shelter.
- Deviation — The act of deviating; a departure from a norm, rule, protocol, or an established mean value. In medical biostatistics, the term is fundamental (standard deviation) to measure the dispersion of clinical data, while in occupational medicine, it indicates a breach of protective or hygiene regulations.
- Slaughterhouse — A specialized industrial facility equipped with appropriate installations for slaughtering livestock, processing meat, and conducting veterinary inspection of carcasses. In public hygiene and epidemiology, a slaughterhouse represents a critical sanitary control point, strictly regulated to prevent outbreaks of trichinosis, salmonellosis, anthrax, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow disease) and to manage biological waste disposal.
- To slaughter commercially — To slaughter animals industrially in an authorized abattoir, complying with technological workflows and medical inspection phases. In veterinary epidemiology and biological crisis management, the act of abatorizating (or sending for emergency slaughter) is a radical measure applied to livestock suspected of cohabiting with infectious vectors, aimed at containing zoonotic outbreaks before they spread to humans.
- Commercial slaughter — The industrial operation of slaughtering and processing livestock in an abattoir, conducted under the strict supervision of veterinary physicians. In public health management, abatorizare acts as a crucial epidemiological filter for identifying diseases transmissible to humans (parasites, bacteria, prions) and guaranteeing the safety of food products entering the market.
- Slaughtered — Having undergone the process of slaughtering and processing in an authorized abattoir; a carcass or meat that has passed the ante-mortem and post-mortem veterinary inspection stages and has been declared fit for human consumption.
- To abdicate — In a forensic and psychopathological context, the term describes the voluntary or forced act by which a person relinquishes prerogatives, rights, or duties due to mental incapacity, alienation, or severe cognitive decline (such as senile dementia). In classic psychology, the verb also defines the pathological relinquishment of the ego's conscious control over impulses, drives, or volition (abdication of the will or abulia).
- Abdication — The act or process by which a person formally relinquishes a right, an administrative function, or a legal responsibility, analyzed in forensic psychiatry from the perspective of the integrity of discernment. In the psychopathology of volition, the term denotes the dynamic suspension of the ego's executive functions, leading to states of profound apathy, learned helplessness, or psychic capitulation in the face of major traumatic stress.
- To abduct — To perform a movement of abduction, consisting of moving a limb, a limb segment, or the eyeball away from the median axis of the body or a reference axis. In neurological and psychiatric semiology, the patient's capacity to abduct certain muscular segments is actively tested to evaluate the integrity of peripheral motor nerves, the frontal cerebral cortex, or to identify signs of catatonic or oppositionist muscular resistance (negativism).
- Abducere — The act or process of executing an abduction movement, consisting of moving a body segment or the eyeball away from the median axis. In neurological semiology and clinical psychiatry, the abduction dynamic is thoroughly evaluated to diagnose pyramidal pathway impairment, test motor reflexes, and identify rigidity in catatonic episodes.
- Abduction — The movement by which a limb, a limb segment, or the eyeball is moved away from the median axis of the body or a reference line. In neurological semiology, testing abduction (such as ocular abduction, performed by cranial nerve VI) is essential for locating brainstem lesions. In clinical psychiatry, resistance to passive abduction of the limbs is analyzed as a marker for waxy flexibility or catalepsy in catatonic syndromes.
- Archaic abduction — An archaic and etymological variant for the term 'abducție', previously used in Romanian medical literature to describe the movement of drawing a body segment or the eyeball away from the median axis. In old treatises on semiology and forensic expertise, this motor dynamic was analyzed to verify the integrity of peripheral nerve pathways or the presence of muscular rigidity specific to catatonic states.
- Intestinal parasite — An archaic term from Romanian folk medicine, used regionally in the past to denote intestinal worms, roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), or, broadly, internal parasites in humans and animals. In old village beliefs, the presence of an abeș was associated with symptoms such as nocturnal abdominal spasms, teeth grinding in children, loss of appetite, or extreme weakness, and was countered with aggressive herbal remedies made from bitter plants.
- Passenger compartment / Cockpit — An interior space specifically designed within a vehicle (automobile, aircraft, spacecraft, etc.) to house and protect passengers, crew, or special cargo. In historical maritime terminology, it denotes the special housing or non-magnetic stand built to shelter the navigation compass.
