#literary critic

• Linguistic refinement — A philosophical and linguistic term coined by Mihai Eminescu, meaning fulfillment, perfection, or the process of refining and eliminating deficiencies from a form of expression or a dialectal system. The concept is formed as a loan-translation based on the German 'abarbeiten' and is used in literary criticism to describe the organic evolution of language through culture.
• Academicizing — A rare and specialized attribute describing a work, attitude, creative method, or discourse that manifests a pronounced tendency toward academicism; a style that tends to copy, adopt, or rigorously and often artificially conform to the formal rules, canons, and patterns enforced by an official institution. Unlike the term 'academic', which denotes legitimate belonging, 'academizant' carries a critical or pejorative nuance, suggesting an inclination toward pedantry, ostentatious conformity, and an excessive pursuit of technical perfection at the expense of vital spirit or artistic originality.
• Annotate — To note down, record, or add notes, observations, comments, explanations, or glosses on the margins of a text, document, manuscript, or book; to insert explanatory elements designed to facilitate the deep understanding or critical interpretation of a literary or scientific work. In a modern sense, it also applies to processing datasets for artificial intelligence.
• To plot — To construct, structure, or organize the fabula (the plot, storyline, or narrative canvas) of a literary work, a dramatic text, or a cinematographic script. This process regulates the logical and chronological sequence of events and actions through which characters evolve, forming the structural baseline of any epic or dramatic composition.
• Ahasveric — Pertaining to or characteristic of Ahasver or the Wandering Jew. In literary criticism and essays, the term describes a state of mind marked by an incurable spiritual nomadism, a profound restlessness, continuous wandering, and a structural inability to settle down or find inner peace.
• Aherontic — Pertaining to or relating to the mythological river Acheron or the Underworld; having a spectral, lugubrious, somber, or infernal character. In literary criticism and aesthetics, the term describes an atmosphere of deep darkness, a work marked by macabre themes, heavy melancholy, or suggestions of death and the afterlife.
• Compulsive mimetism — A literary, abstract, or neologistic term created to conceptualize an individual's obsessive urge, psychological impulse, or mania to perfectly imitate, structurally copy, or identically reproduce behaviors, artworks, lifestyles, or external models. It designates a pathological or aesthetic fixation on faithful duplication, lacking personal originality.
• Allegorical — Containing an allegory or belonging to it; expressed through images, symbols, extended metaphors, or personifications that hide a profound moral or philosophical meaning, different from the literal sense of the words or plastic representations. In criticism, it describes a mode of artistic coding where visual or narrative elements structurally correspond to a parallel system of abstract ideas.
• Allegorism — A tendency, creation method, or artistic style characterized by the excessive or systematic use of allegories and figurative symbols in literary or plastic works. In literary and aesthetic criticism, this structural phenomenon describes an inclination toward the abstract coding of reality, where each narrative or visual element obligatorily points to a parallel moral, mystical, or philosophical meaning.
• Allegorizing — Using allegory or tending toward its use; characterized by a structural inclination toward transforming reality into parables, figurative symbols, or extended metaphors. In aesthetic criticism, the term describes a discourse, style, or author whose narrative or plastic representations deliberately aim to codify abstract moral or philosophical messages.
• Alliterative — Pertaining to alliteration, based on the symmetrical repetition of consonants or sound clusters; characterized by consonantal harmony designed to increase textual musicality. In structural analysis, it describes a device or text built around this type of phonetic correlation.
• Aliterature — An aesthetic and critical concept, originally proposed by Claude Mauriac, designating an avant-garde form of writing liberated from traditional literary conventions, clichés, and rhetoric; an 'anti-literature' striving for pure textual authenticity.
• Blandian — Specific to the style, work, poetic vision, or thematic universe of the Romanian writer and dissident Ana Blandiana (b. 1942). It describes an aesthetic marked by ethical purity, lyrical sobriety, profound metaphysical melancholy, and subtle metaphors of spiritual resistance through fragility in the face of historical oppression or existential decay.
• Anecdotalism — A tendency, predilection, or stylistic mannerism characterized by the excessive use of anecdotes, minor trivial facts, and superficial details in a literary, historical, or analytical work, to the detriment of compositional unity or structural depth.
• Anecdotalize — To turn a historical fact, a serious event, or a broad narrative into an anecdote or a succession of minor, witty stories. This structural process tends to reduce a topic's complexity or depth, presenting it in a fragmented manner focused solely on its picturesque or humorous side.
• Dullness — The state, quality, or structural property of being dull; extreme platitude, a total lack of charm, interest, expressiveness, or creative spirit. In art criticism, the term designates a structural deficiency of a work that, through uniformity and lack of stylistic relief, causes indifference, boredom, and a total absence of emotional response from the receiver.
• Anti-calophilic — Hostile to calophilia, rejecting the tendency toward precious, excessively ornamented writing focused exclusively on the formal beauty of style; a writer or literary critic who campaigns for authenticity, simplicity, direct expression, and the primacy of epic substance over language artifices. In modern Romanian literature, this attitude manifested strongly during the interwar period, promoting the direct reflection of lived experience over academic aestheticism.
• Anti-calophilic — A female writer or literary critic who rejects calophilia, campaigning for a direct, authentic expression devoid of artificial rhetorical ornaments. As an adjective, it describes a literary creation, aesthetic orientation, or feminine critical manifestation characterized by the rejection of precious writing and a focus on the existential substance of the text.
• Anti-classicist — Opposing classicism, its rigid norms, symmetry, formal balance, or established academic rules of composition; an avant-garde writer, artist, or critic campaigning for freedom of expression, subjectivity, and the breaking of traditional patterns. As an adjective, it describes a current, manifesto, style, or artwork (often romantic, realistic, or modernist) characterized by the rejection of classical canons.
• Anti-Junimism — An ideological trend, critical attitude, or cultural movement manifested in the second half of the 19th century in the Romanian space, oriented against the doctrine, aesthetic principles, and political actions of the Junimea society; a structural orientation that challenged the Junimist critical spirit or the theory of 'forms without substance' promoted by Titu Maiorescu.
