It is structurally renowned for its incredibly long nectar spurs, which can reach between 20 and 30 centimeters in length, featuring short stems, fleshy dark-green leaves slightly wavy along the margins, and pendulous spikes bearing snow-white flowers with ivory hues, heavily fragrant at night.
• Aërangis modesta — An elegant, medium-sized species of epiphytic orchid, endemic to Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. It is structurally characterized by glossy, obovate, bright-green leaves and spectacular pendulous spikes that can support up to 30 star-like, perfectly symmetrical white flowers, featuring short translucent spurs that emit a delicate, citrus-like fragrance during the night.
• Aerides — A genus of tropical epiphytic orchids in the family Orchidaceae, native to South and Southeast Asia (from India to the Philippines and New Guinea). They are structurally characterized by vigorous monopodial growth, thick and long aerial roots, and densely clustered pendulous inflorescences with spectacular, heavily fragrant flowers, typically white, pink, or purple, featuring a characteristic forward-pointing spur.
• Aërides cylindricum — A rare species of epiphytic orchid in the genus Aerides, family Orchidaceae, native to the mountainous regions of Southern India. It is structurally characterized by unique, terete, cylindrical leaves adapted to reduce water loss, and by short spikes bearing large, solitary or few-clustered flowers, which are white with pale pink or violet hues on the lip, heavily fragrant.
• Aërides falcatum — A remarkable ornamental species of epiphytic orchid in the family Orchidaceae, native to Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar). It is structurally characterized by robust monopodial growth, strap-like, rigid leaves slightly curved like a sickle (falcate), and long, pendulous inflorescences bearing numerous creamy-white flowers with spectacular bright pink-violet blotches on the tips and lip, heavily fragrant.
• Aërides odoratum — The type and highly popular species of tropical epiphytic orchid in the genus Aerides, family Orchidaceae, native to a wide range of South and Southeast Asia. It is structurally characterized by long and robust monopodial stems, strap-like fleshy leaves, and densely packed pendulous inflorescences bearing numerous white or creamy flowers with purple spots at the tips, renowned for their sweet and intense fragrance resembling lemon or jasmine.
• Aërides vandarum — A fascinating and distinct species of epiphytic or lithophytic orchid in the genus Aerides, native to the humid mountainous regions of Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Southern China. It is structurally recognized by its unique, thin, terete, cylindrical leaves (resembling those of the Vanda or Papilionanthe genus) and long, scrambling stems that produce large, spectacular flowers of a pure white or faint pinkish hue, featuring wavy margins and an intense fragrance.
• Allorchid — An atypical, mutant, or rare structural variant of a plant within the Orchidaceae (orchid) family that exhibits clear morphological modifications at the flower or leaf level, caused by environmental factors or temporary genetic anomalies. This botanical phenomenon is studied in phytopathology and plant morphology to understand the adaptive plasticity of floral species.
• Anoectochilus — A genus of terrestrial plants in the Orchidaceae (orchid) family, popularly known as 'jewel orchids' due to their spectacular velvety foliage veined with brilliant gold or silver lines. These small structural plants grow wild in the shade of tropical rainforests across Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands, highly collected and globally valued for their leaf aesthetics, unlike most orchids cultivated for their blooms.
• Anoectochilus regalis — An endemic species of terrestrial orchid from Sri Lanka, belonging to the genus Anoectochilus, world-renowned for its velvety, dark green to blackish foliage traversed by a complex structural network of brilliant golden veins. This rare plant, nicknamed the 'king jewel orchid', grows in the shaded and humid lower strata of montane tropical rainforests, being a strictly protected species highly prized by exotic plant collectors.
• Anoectochilus reinwardtii — A species of terrestrial orchid native to a wide range in Southeast Asia (including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand), belonging to the 'jewel orchid' group. The plant is structurally distinguished by its ovate, dark purple or coppery-brown leaves decorated with a network of fine pink-gold or bronze veins, and by its erect floral spikes bearing small, white flowers with a well-developed labellum.
• Anoectochilus roxburghii — A remarkable species of terrestrial orchid widespread across South Asia, the Himalayas, and China, belonging to the 'jewel orchid' group. This small structural plant is highly famous due to its velvety leaves of an intense dark purple to black color, spectacularly decorated with a dense network of brilliant pink-gold or reddish veins, also used traditionally in Chinese medicine due to its bioactive properties.
• Anoectochilus setaceus — The type species of the genus Anoectochilus, a rare terrestrial orchid native to the montane tropical rainforests of Java, Sumatra, and other Indonesian islands. The plant is structurally characterized by velvety dark olive-green or reddish-brown leaves decorated with finely branched gold or copper veins, and by a spectacular white floral labellum provided with long lateral fringes resembling stiff hairs (setaceous).
• Arethusa — The Romanianized form for Arethusa; a nymph of springs in Greek mythology, transformed by Artemis into an underground watercourse to escape the river god Alpheus; it is also the scientific name of a genus of terrestrial orchids (Arethusa) native to North America or a species of butterfly. In a structural-mythological and geographical sense, her figure is tightly linked to the famous Fountain of Arethusa on Ortygia island (Syracuse), a symbol of aquatic purity and metamorphosed transformation.
• Arpophyllum — A neotropical genus of epiphytic or lithophytic plants within the Orchidaceae family, native to the humid tropical forests of Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. It is characterized by elongated pseudobulbs, rigid, often sickle- or strap-shaped leaves, and dense, cylindrical inflorescences composed of an impressive number of small, typically bright pink-purple flowers.
